국문초록

본 연구에서는 서울교육종단연구 초등학생 1∼3차년 데이터를 활용하여 자녀를 특성화중학교-특히국제중학교-에 진학시키기를 원하는 부모의 특성을 살펴보았다. 또한 부모의 특성화중학교 진학 수요가 자녀에 대한 교육적 관여에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴보았다. 분석 결과에 따르면, 자녀를 국제중학교에 진학시키고자 하는 부모의 사회경제적 지위와, 사회적 명성이나 취업 및 소득에 있어 대학서열의 중요성에 대한 인식은 자녀를 일반중학교에 진학시키고자 하는 부모의 그것에 비해 높았다.또한 부모가 국제중학교에 진학시키고자 하는 자녀는 해외 거주 경험 비율과 학업성취도 측면에서 부모가 일반중학교에 진학시키고자 하는 자녀에 비해 상대적으로 높았다. 한편, 자녀를 국제중학교에 진학시키고자 하는 부모는 자녀를 일반중학교에 진학시키고자 하는 부모에 비해 학교 교사와의 상담,사교육, 자녀 학습 지원, 자녀와의 여가 및 문화 활동과 체험 활동, 진학 활동 측면에 더 적극적인 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과는 국제중학교가 사회경제적 배경이 높은 자녀들에 의해 교육의 기회가 독점될 가능성을 시사한다.

영문초록

Using data for fourth-grade students from the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study of 2010, this study examined characteristics of parents who desired to send their children to specialized middle schools, especially international middle schools. We found that higher socioeconomic status (SES) parents were more willing to send their children to an international middle school than lower SES parents. Parents who placed higher values on education also were more willing to do so, compared to their counterparts with lower values. In addition, parents whose children ever lived in a foreign country as well as parents whose children are high-achieving had a greater level of aspiration to send their children to an international middle school. Further, parents who wanted to send their children to an international middle school showed a higher level of parental involvement, compared to parents who wanted to send their children to a regular middle school. Together, our findings suggest that international middle schools would likely serve socioeconomically advantaged students.
