The purpose of this research was to investigate the meaning and the understanding of
life before and after higher education experience for people with severe spinal cord injury.
Participants of this study were 4 individuals with severe spinal cord injury who had university
experience and graduated. In-depth interviews were applied to the participants and reason
to enroll a university, curriculum proceeding status, meanings of individual higher education
after graduation were analysed. Six categories were inferred from the analyses of university
experience after the disability. Six categories were time of frustration, motivations of university
enrollment, expectations of university enrollment, facing problems during the enrollment,
disappointments during the enrollment, and meanings of higher education. The result indicated
that research participants gained self-confidence through a higher education and it provided
them more opportunities for an employment. And the employment resulted more income. In
addition, a few practical suggestions were made for more successful university experience for people with severe spinal cord injury.
