This paper aims to examine the meaning of the teaching and learning direction,
which is the core content of the physical education curriculum at the present time
when the value of physical activity in elementary physical education is being applied,
and also aims to explore how the meaning can be implemented in actual classes. As
a result of the study, there are five directions of the teaching-learning direction of
the 2011 elementary school physical education curriculum applied in the field. The
meanings are as follows: First, it is suggested that creativity and personality be taught
through physical education classes in the 2011 physical education curriculum. In order
to achieve this, a class environment for creativity and personality should be provided.
Second, in the curriculum, level-based instruction considering individual differences in
physical education classes is emphasized. For this purpose, setting goals considering
the level of each student should be established, and education linked with evaluations
should be undertaken. Third, it emphasizes self-directed learning. In order to achieve
this, inquiry classes according to learning contents, an understanding-based game class
model, and other appropriate classes should be applied. Fourth, it emphasizes
integrated teaching and learning. In order to achieve this, not only should focusing on
the acquisition of the partial functions of sports be required, experience of various
activities should also be required to fully understand physical activities. Fifth, teachers
should have much knowledge of class models and class styles necessary for physical
education classes in order to have good classes. In this respect, Pedagogical Content
Knowledge (PCK) is a necessary knowledge that teachers should have for teaching
good physical education classes.
