이 연구는 중산층이 군집하고 있는 분당구의 중학생 학부모를 대상으로 자녀교육과 이웃효과의 관계를 조사하였다. 연구 결과 분당은 자녀의 명문대 진학을 위해 자녀의 성적, 시간, 교육, 교우 관계 등을 체계적으로 관리하고 있는 ‘자녀관리’ 문화가 지배문화로 있었다. 자녀에게 중산층 지위를 세습시키기 위해서 욕망과 습속이 유사한 사람들 또는 자녀의 지위 향상에 유익한 사람들 로 모임을 제한하고 그 외의 사람들을 배제하였다. 하지만 일부 부유한 자영업자나 사업가 또는 상속자들은 이들과는 달리 자녀의 명문대 진학에 덜 집착했다. 이들은 학력 외에도 경제력이나 즐기는 삶에 가치를 두었기 때문이다. 일부 중산층 학부모들은 성적과 인성을 함양하는 교육 그 리고 교사와 학부모가 참여하는 학교로의 변화에 가치를 두었다. 이는 중산층의 현 지위 획득 및 유지 과정에서 학력이 얼마나 중요하게 영향을 주는가 그리고 교육적 가치와 행복에 대한 기준이 무엇인가에 따라서 자녀의 교육문화에 차이가 있음을 시사한다.
This paper explores relationship between neighbor effect and child education of parents whose children attend junior high schools in Boondang-Gu, Seongnam city where middle class residents congregate. We do this by interviewing 12 parents, 2 teachers, and a head-officer in child welfare center, the director of a private institute. The great majority of middle class parents in Bonndang devote to child management that parents systematically plan and monitor their children's academic achievement, extra curriculum activities, friends, and time in order to go to top colleges. However there are some parents who are not very eager to their children's entering into top colleges. There are wealthy parents who engage in self-employment or businesses or those who inherit considerable wealth from ancestors. Some parents try to make current school entrance examination oriented education in to schooling that care for all children's various abilities, experiences, interests and dreams. This implies that even same middle class people construct various child education culture according to the nature of critical capital that contributes to acquiring and maintaining current social status.
