Purpose: This study was aimed to identify the relationships between cultural competency and empathy of college
students. Methods: The participants were 172 general college students who agreed to participate in the study and were
studying in an university in Seoul city. A structured questionnaire that covered the three tested constructs was conducted
between Nov. 1 to 4, 2015. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation
coefficient with SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. Results: The mean score of cultural competency and empathy of participants
were 3.76 and 3.77, respectively. Awareness of personal values, beliefs, and biases of Cultural competence was found to
be significantly positively correlated with empathy (r=.217, p=.004). Conclusion: The findings suggest that college students
need to enhance cultural competency and empathy. It is necessary to develop and organize long-term programs and
curriculums that can improve the cultural competence and empathy of college students.
