The purpose of this paper is to clarify the contributions of Herbert Read and Thomas Munro, who were
the representatives of English and American aesthetician in the late 20th century, to the thoughts of art
education. Especially, I will illuminate their thoughts on the relationship between art education and international
understanding, and explain the difference of their viewpoints. They were deeply involved with the establishment
of InSEA. Their thoughts set a very solid foundation to build the idea of international understanding
combined with art education since World War Ⅱ.
In this paper, I will show their roles in art education by exploring the materials of UNESCO on the process
of the establishment of InSEA. And then, I will consider Herbert Read's contribution to the international understanding
through art which was generated from his criticism on the policy of UNESCO, and at once
Thomas Munro's opinion of the connection of art education and international understanding by reading his
collected papers on art education. Further, I will explore and analyze comparatively the difference of their
arguments.
