This study investigated the recognition of barrier-free transport by professional drivers. Furthermore, we intended to clarify the issues centeríng on educatíon of professíonal drivers. In this study, we especíally focused on barrier-free transport of the visually impaired, wheelchair users, and senior citizens in road traffic. The summary of the results is presented below. 1) The stereotype that people with a visual impairment use a guide dog was strong among professional drivers. In fact, the total number of people using guide dogs constitutes less than 1 % of persons with visual ímpairments. 2) Professional drivers had a tendency to overestimate the ability of the guide dog. Many drivers even believed that a guide dog is capable of telling traffic signals . 3) There were drivers who had the possibility of taking improper actíons. For instance, we received the following responses : “On seeing a physically challenged person, I blow the horn." ; “Even if I saw a physically challenged person, I would not decelerate."; “If a person with a visual impairment is waiting for the traffic signal, I inform him that the traffic signal changed by tapping his shoulder." Many drivers are unable to appropriately react in an actualsituation, because they are unaware of the requirements of a physically challenged person. Therefore, it is necessary to educate the professional drivers on barrier- free transport.
