The aim of this study is to introduce the program for traffic barrier.free education,
which was practiced through simulation classes at Ebetsu Elementary School in
Hokkaido.
Students in this school spent about six months studying the traffic education under
the slogan “ Action for Barrier. Free Transport!. - Do something now! - “
In these lessons, students thought about what they could do so that all people could
make safe and comfortable use of roads and about how society should be changed, for
people such as pedestrians, cyclists, infants, the aged and people with handicap. As a
result of their studies, they actually checked the roads around the school as
pedestrians and from the simulated position of handicapped people.
Through this lesson, the students concluded some concrete ideas for the assistance of
the handicapped such as “ When we see someone in a wheelchair moving on a slope, we
want to help them by pushing the wheelchair."
In addition, they came to realize how society needs to be changed for people with
handicap , for example “It is not good to put any obstacles on the pavement that may
hinder people in wheelchairs." and ‘’Broken textured paving blocks should be
repaired ’.
