In China, there are few researches concerned about the handicapped so far. Especially, current researches never touch the topic of how to understand the handicapped for the society. This investigation chose the students in a normal teacher's university as sample observation, trying to focus on how they understand the handicapped. In April 2004, we charged the investigation by questionnaire though university faculty. Totally there are 159 investigated persons, with 112 females and 45 males who take 70 and 28 percentage respectively (with 2 missing). Their average age is 20. Their majors cover Chinese, history, physical education, etc. but except deformity. Not only did we investigate the experience of getting along with the handicapped, but also we did the survey on the present status of education for understanding the handicapped, as well as the people’s attitudes towards the handicapped. As the result of data analyzing, through education of the elementary school to the university, observations only accepted only little education or information related to the deformity. Quite a number of students realize insufficiency of education and welfare assuring system supplied to the handicapped by the society. Meanwhile, they hope it will be improved in the future. On the other hand, there exists a phenomenon that the handicapped is somewhat discriminated as well as being unconcerned. Through this investigation, we got the basic information about the understanding for the handicapped by university students in some degree. The further research extending to larger observation groups such as middle school students and teachers will become our new task in the future.
