The objective of this study is to obtain basic data to prepare recommendations to
ensure and improve safety and comfort of the moving environment for visually
impaired persons, by means of surveying and clarifying how is the actual situations of
walking e -mail users on cellular phones as a barrier to visually impaired persons_
The survey was conducted in March 2007 by telephone interviews with, and by
distribution of questionnaire sheets by e-mail to, 13 visually impaired students, who
are sophomores at a university in Tokyo_
The current survey has confirmed that all of the surveyed students have experienced
collisions with pedestrians, and that five of them have collided with walking e-mail
users on cellular phones. Many of them have shown a firm view that e-mailing on
cellular phones should be done at the places where no troubles are anticipated to
others.
Our study plans for the future to develop measures to ensure and improve safety and
comfort of the moving environment for disabled persons, by comparing result of the
current study with results of the surveys in the past on the influence of cellular phone
e-mail users upon wheelchair users, as well as on the current situation of use of
e-mailing on cellular phones by university students during walking.
