This study is to investigate the needs for special assistance through the narratives
on educational experiences by the grownup people with spina bifida and to analyze the
8 cases who learned both at the school for the ordinary students and at the school for
the physically challenged using grounded theory approach.
The results indicate; 1) At ordinary schools, there’s a lack of explanation to the other
healthy children concerning to how to deal with the physically challenged, thus would
induce bullying. 2) There’s a tendency in the school for the challenged that the
academic achievement is not considered to be important. 3) At schools for the ordinary
children, the evaluation of Physical Education has been done for the challenged on the
equal basis as the other healthy children. 4) Through experiencing education in these
two kinds of schools, the physically challenged students can have totally opposite
experiences concerning to their own disability.
It is necessary, in providing both healthy and handicapped students with specially
assisted education in the same site, to give thorough explanation to the healthy
students and encourage them to understand the disability of the challenged.
Therefore, it is considered that the medical professionals should be responsible in
giving sufficient explanation about the disability to the challenged children
themselves, guardians and educators.
