The purpose of this study is to propose policy implications to expand high-ranking female officers,
including female executives in the banking industry at individual, organizational, and government level,
through person-to-person in-depth interviews with 7 current female executives at general director or higher
positions in banks, including foreign banks in Korea that are known to have a high glass ceiling based on
causes and issues that may influence the promotion of women to executive positions. The interviews
highlighted the study issues at the individual, organizational, and government level. At the individual level,
a total of 5 issues were formulated, including effective career development strategy until promoted to an
executive position, core competencies required by female executives, effort to take good care of both
occupational and domestic matters, personal ground for women to not be promoted to executive positions,
and the expansion of high-ranking positions for women. At the organizational level, a total of study 6
issues were formulated, including difficulties in organizational living, effective career development strategy
until promoted to an executive position, status of implementing the organization system to promote women
employment, presence and reasons of a glass ceiling within organizations, interfering factors in growth into
high-ranking positions for women, and the strategic plan for expanding the high-ranking positions for
women. At the government level, a proposal to expand the high-ranking positions for women was
formulated as the study issue.
