This inquiry began with an effort to find answers about the significance and value of my mother’s life
and with my life, while I was confronted with an ontological question about whether my separation from
her was healthy. This inquiry focused on ontological questioning and required awareness concerning both
my mother under suffering from dementia and losing her fullness of existence, and my life issues in terms
of existence. A narrative inquiry method was used to reconstruct and actualize the significance, value, and
purpose of living. I analyzed collected artifacts, including my mother’s mandalas before and during
dementia, and my daily journals and artworks. The inquiry revealed in the course of the inquiry was the
visualized representation of my mother doing her best in life. Meanwhile, my mother enjoyed the joy of
concentration with a sincere attitude while creating mandalas and revealed that she felt “freedom and
happiness while confronting her life truthfully.” The words, “happiness is from the center of mind”, spoken
to me when my mother was young and healthy, confirmed that her teaching was still valid for my life and
led me to learn the wisdom of “infinity” in “finiteness” of life. This process helped me realize the value of
living and drawing as the process of ruminating the mother’s life, and inquiring about her life led me to
accept a healthy separation and to communicate with others.
