The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of the music therapy
using tone chimes on self-esteem and interpersonal relation of multicultural
adolescents. Music therapy session using tone chimes, which includes playing
melody, harmony, 2 parts, and 3 parts ensemble, was organized and operated
based on using music that is familiar to adolescents from pop music to
Original Sound Track and classic music. The subjects of this study were
selected from M foreign school in Seoul. Of 20 participants, 10 were
randomly assigned into an experimental group, and the other 10 were
assigned into a control group. The SPSS 20.0 program was utilized for data
analysis of the results of following tests: Mann-Whitney U, Ranked
ANCOVA, and Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks. The result of this
research is below. First, adolescents in experimental group who participated
in the music therapy with tone chimes showed statistically significant
difference in self-esteem. Second, adolescents in experimental group who
participated in the music therapy with tone chimes showed statistically
significant difference in interpersonal relation. By showing the positive result
of the music therapy with tone chimes in self-esteem and interpersonal
relation of multicultural adolescents, this study affirms the music therapy
with tone chimes not only as an effective way to support intercultural
adolescents both socially and emotionally, but also as a practical therapeutic
method which can be applicable to a school setting.
