This article examines the problems of existing mode of curriculum design and suggests new design of
school curriculum to solve the problems. In general school curriculum is the main entity of educational
process of learning community. Usually school curriculum consists of the subject to teach and learn under
the control of school governance. According to school curriculum, we can see the aims of education and
educational contents. Until now school curriculum has been designed and implemented by forward design,
aims and objectives, educational content, teaching method, educational evaluation and assessment. There are
many problems of educational process, superficial learning, coverage-based delivery in this approach. In this
paper, to overcome these problems, we intends to discuss the backward design. Backward design focuses on
authentic understanding and performance assessment for Understanding by Design. In Backward design, the
procedures of design proceeds three steps, 1. desired result, 2. evidence of performance, 3. arrangement of learning experience. Through backward design, school curriculum should be reconstructed for student's
authentic understanding. To solve the problems of existing mode of school curriculum design, this study
adopts critical review of related literature and philosophical analysis. In the future, backward design of
school curriculum should be developed through teachers' learning community and autonomous research
within class and school culture.
