The purpose of this study was to analyze text’s reading level on the reading books selected
for both 1st ~ 3rd and 4th ~ 6th graders by co-authors’ arbitrary decision. For this purpose, 40
reading books for children were included. When we analyzed the text’s reading level, we hired
Kim(2001)’s formula to analyze book’s reading level. As the research results, 12 books were
appeared as first grade reading level, four books were 2nd grade level, nine books were 3rd
grade level, six books were 4th grade level, five books wer 5th grade level, four books were
6th grade level. We concluded as follows based on the results. First, the accuracy rate for
selecting 1st grade reading level books based on arbitrary decision of elementary school teachers
might be very high. Second, the accuracy rate for dichotomous selecting as low or upper grade
reading level books based on arbitrary decision of elementary school teachers might be high as
much as 80%. Third, the accuracy rate for differentiating low vs. middle vs. upper grade
reading level books based on arbitrary decision of elementary school teachers might be poor
Fourth, the accuracy rate for differeentiation according to each grade reading level book based on arbitrary decision of elementary school teachers might be very poor. The discussion included
why we reached to these conclusions and the necessity to utilize the analyzing formula for
selecting appropriate books for each student’s reading level when teachers prepare for reading
fluency intervention.
