This study aims to disrupt the notion of disability through a critical analysis of an autobiographical story of the researcher. First of all, it presents a story about the researcher’s amblyopia and her mother’s anophthalmia. Then, the autobiographical story is analyzed through the theoretical framework informed by Disability Studies and Homi Bhabha’s theory of cultural translation. The analysis focuses on how the researcher and her mother have constructed different experiences and a sense of self although their impairments cause almost similar degrees of functional limitations. This study shows how the habitual framing of disability fails to appropriately represent their hybrid way of being. It sheds light on the discursive and complex ways in which one is constituted as disabled. This study discusses what possibility the hybridity, which is revealed in the analysis of the story, can create in negotiating the meanings of disability. Lastly, the implication that this study has for social researchers is explored.
본 연구는 자서전적 이야기를 통해 장애라는 개념이 어떻게 규정되고 인식되는지 탐색함 으로써 장애를 재해석하는 것에 목적을 둔다. 먼저, 연구자와 연구자의 어머니가 가지는 눈의 손상(impairment)에 대한 자서전적 이야기를 제시하며, 장애학과 호미 바바의 문화번역 이론 을 사용하여 이를 분석한다. 본 연구는 연구자와 연구자의 어머니가 같은 정도의 시각적 손상 을 가졌음에도 불구하고 다른 삶의 경험과 자아정체감을 형성했다는 것에 중점을 두고 무엇 이 이러한 차이를 가져왔는지 분석한다. 이를 통해 특정 종류의 다양성, 그리고 특정 정도의 다양성이 어떻게 장애로 전환되며, 그러한 과정에 있어서 당사자의 욕구와 타인의 요구 사이 의 갈등이 어떻게 작용되는지 보여준다. 본 연구는 장애를 설명하는 전통적인 방식이 연구자 와 연구자 어머니의 혼종적 정체성을 적절하게 재현하지 못한다는 것을 지적하며, 이러한 혼 종성이 장애의 재해석 관련하여 어떠한 가능성을 생성해내는지 논의한다. 마지막으로, 본 연 구가 갖는 시사점과 추후 연구에 대한 제안들에 대해 논의한다.
