The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of group counseling for school adaptive ability improvement
using cinema on self-esteem, interpersonal relations, and school adaption of high school students with school
maladjustment.
After conducting a school adaptability test on 30 students with school maladjustment issues from among the
first year students at K high school who were selected by the head of first year students and homeroom
teachers, 20 students who had a score of 2.25 or lower and desired to participate in the group counseling
program were selected. They were then randomly assigned to two groups, an experimental group and a control
group, with 10 students in each group. A program was carried out on the experimental group consisting of 10
sessions which met twice a week for 90 minutes each from July 11, 2011 to August 11, 2011. Group
counseling for school adaptive ability improvement using cinema was carried out on the experimental group and,
during this same period, no action was taken on the control group.
In order to verify the effectiveness of this program, pre-post tests on self-esteem, interpersonal relations and
adaption to school life were performed on the experimental group and the control group, and the mean score
and standard deviation of each scale was obtained by using the SPSS/WIN+18.0 statistical program. To verify
the differences between the experimental and control group, a Covariance (ANCOVA) analysis of the post-test scores of the two groups was performed using the pre-test scores of both groups as covariates.
The results of the study are as follow.
First, the level of self-esteem of the experimental group who participated in the group counseling for school
adaptive ability improvement using cinema was increased compared to the controlled group who did not.
Second, the level of interpersonal relationships of the experimental group who participated in the group
counseling for school adaptive ability improvement using cinema were improved compared to the controlled
group who did not.
Third, the level adaptability in school of the experimental group who participated in the group counseling for
school adaptive ability improvement using cinema was increased compared to the controlled group who did not.
Based on the result of the study, it was possible to see that group counseling for school adaptive ability
improvement using cinema was an effective program for improving the self-esteem, interpersonal relationships and
school adaptation of high school students with school maladjustment.
