This study was conducted to analyze the counseling contents of patients with lung cancer. A total of
168 patients with lung cancer received counseling from nurses and 480 counseling data were used for
analysis. Nursing needs of patients with lung cancer were identified from this data, which included
physical, informational, and emotional needs. Physical nursing needs included symptom management,
informational nursing needs were those of appointment and description of medical care, schedule and
description of tests, education of side effects of anti-cancer drugs, infusion injection path management,
dietary education, nutrition education, education of side effects of transfusion, and alternative-food
management, and emotional nursing needs were mitigation of anxiety and, stress management. Results of
this study can help understand the nursing needs of patients with lung cancer and recommend the
development of a counselling protocol to meet the patient’s needs, which in turn will shorten their length
of hospitalization and reduce their medical costs.
