This study aimed to verify moderating effects of social support and disability acceptance in the relationship between parenting stress and psychological well being. For this study, a survey was conducted for 307 parents (elementary school: 113, middle school: 101, and high school: 91) who had children with disabilities attending the special schools or special classes.
The results were as follows.
First, the moderating effect of social support was significant on the relationship between parenting stress and psychological well-being of the parents of children with disabilities. Also, among subtypes of parenting stress, the moderation effects of social support were significant in economic stress, psychological stress and educational stress. Second, the moderating effect of disability acceptance was significant on the relationship between parenting stress and psychological well-being of the parents of children with disabilities. Also, among subtypes of parenting stress, the moderation effects of disability acceptance were significant in economic stress, psychological stress, social stress, physical stress and educational stress. These results imply that the relationships between parenting stress and psychological well-being are different according to the levels of social support and disability acceptance, and the moderation effect varies depending on the subtype of parenting stress.
