The purpose of this study was to suggest better ways to teach social studies and directions for developing teaching and learning of social studies for students with severe disabilities after investigating on perception of special education teacher's on teaching practices of basic social studies curriculum. For this study, focus group interview was carried out for special education teachers who are teaching social studies.
The results were as follows.
First, they thought the main goal of teaching social studies was to have them indirect experience and prepare for community living in the future. Second, widely used teaching methods were ICT, NIE among conceptional model and problem solving strategy. They thought integrated curriculum and community based teaching were very helpful for them to understand social studies contents. Third, special teachers perceived evaluation as an essential thing to check efficacy of teaching. There were limitations in carrying out an objective evaluation of social studies due to the difficulties caused by students’ cognitive limitations and lack of response generalization.
Based on these findings, the suggestion of how to teach and evaluate in social studies for students with severe disabilities were discussed.
