1990년 人民日報에 보도된 중국인구통계에 따르면 전 중국 인구의 8.6 퍼센트가 55개 소수민족으로 구성되었고 그 가운데 조선족은 1,920,597명에 이른다고 한다. 조선족은 주지하다시피 대부분 중국의 북동쪽에 살고 있으며 특히 延邊地域에 집중되어 있다. 중국은 정부 수립 후 소수민족에 대해 교육과 문화 사업에서 자치권을 인정하여 그들 나름대로의 언어와 풍습을 유지하는 권한을 부여하였다. 본 논문은 중국 내 조선족의 조선어 교육제도와 이중언어문제에 대해 고찰하고자 했다. 조선족은 중국의 타민족에 비해 문맹률이 가장 낮다. 漢族이 34%의 문맹률을 지니고 있으며, 티벳족은 여자는 90%, 남자는 60%가 문맹자이다. 이는 조선족의 언어교육이 얼마나 성공했는가를 대변하고 있다. 중국의 타민족들이 조국이 없는 상황에서 조선족은 1980년대 이전에는 북한으로부터 영향을 많이 받았고 1980년대 이후에는 남한으로부터 영향을 받아 조선족의 언어문화의 향상에 많은 도움이 되었다.
According to 1990 statistics of People\'s Daily(人民日報), fifty nationalities including the Han are officially recognized. The minority nationalities, however, occupy just about 8.6 percent of the whole population in China. 1,920,597 Koreans are in China, making up the twelfth largest of its population of China\'s fifty-five minority nationalities. Most of them are living in the Northeast, especially concentrated in Yanbian(延邊), where Koreans comprise about 40.5 percent of the population. After the PRC founded the new government, Koreans along with other nationalities have enjoyed the autonomy to manage independently their own education and culture, and the rights to preserve their language, customs, traditions and religious beliefs in public. It is estimated that the Koreans in China have developed their language and ethic education well
