The purpose of this study was to determine the differences and the correlations between the parenting
stress and parenting attitudes of special class students’ parents based on their individual characteristics. For
this research, a researcher surveyed the parents whose children attend the special class at normal
elementary, middle, and high schools in S city of Gyeonggi Province. Special classes of 38 randomly
selected schools were distributed with 270 questionnaires, 215(79.6%) of which were replied; finally 206
(76.3%) were used for analysis. The results were as follows: First, the special class students’ parents have
more parenting stress than the average when raising the children; the young parents with elementary
school children and the parents with the low average monthly income and monthly expenses for their
children’s training and treatment have more significant economic stress than the average. Second, the
parents with special class children show more affectionate parenting behavior, a positive parenting behavior,
than the normal; more education and higher average monthly payment parents have, their positive
parenting behavior is high while the negative parenting behavior is low. Lastly, the special class students’
parents with high level of parenting stress show more negative parenting behavior. On the other hand,
the parents with the low level of parenting stress show more positive parenting behavior. Thus, the
parenting stress of the parents who raise children with disabilities can be lessen through various supports
that can help parents have positive parenting behaviors
