The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of case particles use in 4- and 5-year-old
children raised in multicultural families. In the present study a total of participated twenty children were
assigned into four different groups. Each group had five children, who are from multicultural families
(MC) and CA matched children from non-multicultural families(NMC). The spontaneous speech utterances
in the play situation were collected from each child, and the frequency and the error rate of case particles
from their utterances were analyzed. There was no significant difference in the frequencies of the case
particle use and the error rate between MC and NMC groups. However, the significant differences were
observed between 4-year and 5-year groups in production frequencies of case particle uses. This result
implies 4 to 5-year-old Korean children from MC appeared to develop the case marker use in speech
similar to NMC peers. Further study is needed to find out the language development in children with
MC backgrounds.
