In order to improve self-esteem and interpersonal relations of adolescents in institutional care, this study was to examine and analyze the change of self-esteem and personal relations by group(experimental group, control group) and period(before the treatment, after 4, 8, 12 weeks). Moreover it intends to pursue the difference between the groups to which dance/movement therapy has been applied and the ones to which dance/movement treatment has not been applied.
The Subjects of this study targets male and female youths currently attending middle school while residing in child welfare institution on K, S, G region in Seoul. The Subjects consist of 50 students in all who belong to experimental group(31 students) participated in dance/movement therapy and control group(19 students).
As measurement instrument, scale on self-esteem, interpersonal relations have been used. Subordinate factors include the 31 inquires such as studies and general self, self in relation to friends, self in relation to teachers, physical appearance self, personal self and physical-ability self. Subordinate factors of interpersonal relations include the 10 inquires such as contentment/intimacy, communication, openness and understanding.
The following results are supported by the finding this study
1. In the analysis of differences between self-respect according to gender and period in experimental groups, the significant difference shows only in inquiries like self in relation to friends, self in relation to teachers and physical-appearance self. Physical-ability shows significant difference in main effect period. Personal self in main effect period and gender, studies and general self displays the significant difference in main effect gender, but do not exhibit the significant difference in terms of interaction.
2. In the analysis of differences between sense of self-respect according to groups (experimental group, control group) and period, inquires such asself in relation to friends shows significant differences in interaction period and main effect period. Inquiries such as physical-ability self in interaction and categories like physical-appearance self in main effect period show significant differences, but in categories such as personal self, self in relation to teachers, studies and general self significant differences do not exhibit.
3. In the analysis of differences between personal relations according to gender and period in experimental group, contentment and intimacy, openness and understanding show the significant difference in the main effect period, but do not show it in the categories such as main effect, gender and interaction. Communication does not show the significant difference in the any cases.
4. In the analysis of differences between personal relations according to group (experimental group, control group) and period, openness and understanding show the significant difference in categories such as interaction period * group but not in the main effect period and group. Meanwhile, contentment, intimacy and communication show meaningful difference in the any cases.
By all accounts, in all the subordinate factors except categories like studies and general self, they increase in all with the exception of communication. In comparisons between experimental group and control group, self in relation to friends, physical-ability self, openness and understanding increase, leading to the positive effects in interpersonal relations and self-esteem of facilities youths.
