In this article, I investigated a possibility of teaching creation of poetry through
parody popular songs for adolescents. When students write a parody poem,
teachers must present well known songs for adolescents as an original texts. The
original texts need not to be limited to use the words, but need to use all devices
as a playing arts.
To create a poetry through parody, students interpret the original text in the
first place. Next, expand meanings by assimilation and defamiliarization, and plan
the plot of parody poem by self-reflective elaborating. Last, they write the parody
poem by formulating all ideas. In the process of writing parody poem, students
must consider the words of popular song as a music, and the properties of poetry
as an art of language.
I categorize the methods of teaching creation of poetry through parody popular
songs to 4 types. The first is parody of imitative borrowing that expand meanings
as following the main theme of original text. The second is parody of critical
modification that create a new poem by modifying and inversion the original text.
The third is parody of pastiche that create a new poem by cut and paste two or
three original texts. And the last is parody in cyberspace that write a poem with
computer and internet.
Creation of poetry through parody popular songs for adolescents is very important
because it related with many concepts of modern literary criticism. For example,
inter-textuality, self-reflection, meta-composition as a writing open texts, and
critifiction, etc. And it related with reader-responded theory and social-constructivism,
also. So, it is a good method of teaching poetry in post-modern age.
