This study aims to improve teaching methodology of teaching elementary school
students a group dance for sports days through examining the actual case of
teaching group dance in J elementary school. The whole process of preparation for
the group dance for the sports day was described to help people understand what
the sports day is, and then the preparation and actual teaching steps were
examined.
The conclusion is as follows. The sports day of J elementary school was almost
same as those of other schools. There were usually team competitions, individual
competitions, group dance, games for parents, and celebration events in the sports
days. After the preparation stage the headmaster and the deputy were changed and
the number of classes was decreased, so the preparation time and the sports day
events were shrunk than originally they were.
According to the sports day plan, teachers were supposed to teach students a
group dance for seventeen days and then the students had to practice for four days
on the school ground which would be the actual stage of their performance. There
were various kinds of dances such as Recreation Dance, Folk Dance, and Cheer
Dance. The teachers consulted EBS, Physical Education curriculum, and other
teachers\' methodologies. The practice was divided into two stages. On the first stage
students watched visual material and learned segments of the dance and music in
the class room, and then they practiced whole series of dance on the school ground.
