The objective of this study is to examine the effects of dancing programs on children\'s self-esteem and the their social skill, by developing a dancing program and applying it to primary school students in the 6th year.
The program is based on the dancing programs of Doo Ryun Kim(1997) and Ok Gi Kim(1992), previous researches about programs for primary schools and other relevant matetials. This is composed of 30 times, forty minuts classes.
The subjects of this study were 86 children from 2 sixth year classes of B primary school at Yangsan-si Gyeongsangnam-do. They were diviede into atest group and a control groyp, both of which included 43 children. The program was applied 3 times a week for 10 weeks. The children in the test group had the classes at morning activity time that were performed according to the program developed, and those in the control group did not. The dancing program was composed of four parts, which were rhythm activity, expression activity, rhthm activity using instruments, and folk dances.
To assess self-esteem of the children, we selected 23 questions from the criteria of self-esteem developed by Bo Ga Choi & Gui Yun(1993) through inter-item consistency reliability(71~.76) test. To assess social skill, wee selected 23 questions from the social diagnosis tool created by MaEwen(1993) through inter-item consistency reliability (.62~.73) test. for statistic analysis of the data, we employed SPSS/PC+(version 10.0) and t-test(p<0.05)
Abalyzing the collected data according to the objective and methodology of the stydy, we obtained the following results.
First, thowe in the test group, to which the dancing program was appoied, showed improvement in theif self-eateem, compared to those in the control group.
According to the result from testin the self-esteem of the two group after applying the dancing program to them, there were significant differences in the mean values of the self-esteem at home_t=7.85, p<.001), the self-esteem at school ( t+4.63m p<.001), and the self-esteem in general(t=4.69, p<.001).
Second, those in the test group showed improvement in their social skill, compared to those in the controp group.
According to the result from testing the social skill of the two group after applying the dancing program to them, there were significant differences in the mean values of the personal relationship(t+6.01, p<.001) to them, there were significant differences in the mean values of the personal relationship(t+60.1, p<.001), the class activity (t=9.91,p>.001), and the social reasoning skill(t=7.28, p<.001)
