이 연구는 정의(definition)에 대한 우리의 관점을 세 가지 수준으로 구성하고, 이에 근거 해 교육의 정의를 비판적으로 검토하였다. 교육학자들은 교육학의 이론과 실천, 그리고 교육학 교육의 맥락에서 교육을 다양하게 정의해 왔다. 그러나 교육의 정의에 대한 이들의 믿음이 무엇인지, 그것이 올바른 것인지, 또 그들의 믿음대로 교육의 정의가 작동하고 있는지를 검토한 적은 별로 없다. 이 연구에서는 정의에 대한 일반이론가들의 이론을 토대로 정의에 대한 이해 수준을 실재적 정의, 언어적 정의, 맥락적 정의로 구성했다. 실재적 정의는 정의를 사물의 본 질을 찾고 제시하는 것으로, 언어적 정의는 언어의 고유한 의미를 찾고 제시하는 행위로, 맥락 적 정의는 의사소통의 맥락에서 부여된 언어의 의미를 제시하는 것으로 보고 있다. 교육의 정 의와 관련해서는 교육학을 소개하는 성격을 갖고 있는 교재를 선정하여 분석하였다. 분석의 결과는 교육 정의의 대상의 문제, 교육 정의의 나열과 종합의 문제, 교육의 어원적 정의의 문 제로 나누어 제시하였다.
Definition has been practiced and discussed in the filed of education. The article is to clarify our conception of definition and to critique definitions of education. To pursue the problem of definitions of education, I suggest that there are three levels of definition, which I call real, lexical, and contextual. The real definition is concerned with things in general. The lexical definition is concerned with a universally accepted meaning of language. The contextual definition need not be universally accepted nor generally understood, but is treated as belonging within the realm of communicational context. The article critiques definitions of education with reference to the purposes and object of definitions. Specifically, I argue against fallacies and errors which array of definitions of education, synthesis of definitions of education, and etymological definition of education could have.
