본 연구에서는 HLM 분석을 통해 수준별 이동수업과 지각된 수업특성이 중학생의 학업성취에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 한국교육종단연구2005(KELS) 자료를 사용하였다. 연구 참여자들은 전국 150개의 중학교 1학년생 6908명(남학생 3617명, 여학생 3291명)이었다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중학생의 학업성취는 학교 간 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 영어 성취도가 우수한 집단에서는 어떠한 수업특성도 학업성취에 유의한 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 반면, 영어 성취도가 부진한 집단에서는 지각된 구조화 수업특성이 학생들의 학업성취를 유의하게 증진시켰다. 수학 성취도가 우수한 집단에서는 지각된 촉진적 수업특성이 중학생들의 학업성취를 유의하게 증가시켰다. 반면 수학 성취도가 낮은 집단에서는 어떠한 수업특성도 효과가 나타나지 않았다. 셋째, 수준별 이동수업은 어떤 집단에서도 학업성취에 대한 유의한 효과가 없었다.
This study investigated the effects of ability grouping and perceived class characteristics upon the levels of academic achievement by middle school students\' through HLM (Hierarchical Linear Modeling) analysis. The participants were 6908 (boys 3617, girls 3291) middle school students selected from the 2005 data of the KELS. The results were as follows: (1) There were significant differences among different schools in terms of the middle school students\' levels of academic achievement. (2) Not all class characteristics influenced English achievement in the group of high English ability, however, perceived structured class characteristics influenced English achievement in the group of low English ability. (3) Perceived facilitative class characteristics influenced mathematics achievement in the group of high mathematics ability, however, not all class characteristics had an influence on mathematics achievement in the group of low mathematics ability. (3) Ability grouping didn\'t influence academic achievement in all of the groups.
