시각장애아동은 모두 시각장애만을 가지고 있는 것은 아니다. 많은 시각장애아동은 시각장애뿐만 아니라 청각장애, 지적장애와 같은 중복장애를 가지고 있다. 하지만, 국내에는 시각중복장애아동에 대한 교육적 관심과 지원이 부족한 편이다. 본 연구에서는 시각중복장애에 대한 외국의 최근 경향을 살펴보고, 시각중복장애아동의 교육을 지원하기 위한 방법들을 알아보았다. 이를 위해, 시각장애 분야에서 잘 알려진 두 저널 Journal of Visual Impairments & Blind(JVIB)와 RE:view에서 2000년 이후 개제된 논문에 대한 문헌 검토를 하였다. 문헌분석결과 외국에서는 시각중복장애에 관한 많은 연구 논문을 찾아 볼 수 있었으며 특히 시청각장애에 대한 관심이 많이 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 시각중복장애아동의 연구대상 연령은 연령대별로 고르게 분포 되어 있으며, 연구유형으로는 실험연구와 사례연구가 가장 많이 이루어지고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 시각중복장애아동의 교육을 위해서는 크게 교육환경, 학생지도, 평가와 같이 세 가지 영역으로 나누어 지원될 필요가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 연구자는 국내에도 시각중복장애 연구에 대한 보다 많은 연구의 필요성과 시각중복장애아의 교육을 위해 체계적인 접근의 중요성을 강조하였다.
All children with visual impairment do not have only visual impairment. Many children with visual impairment have additional disabilities such as hearing impairment and intellectual disabilities. However, our country do not have much interest and support about the education for children who have visual impairment and multiple disabilities. This study examined the current trend of visual impairment with additional disabilities, and explored the ways to support the education for children with visual impairment and multiple disabilities. To do this, the researchers reviewed articles which were published since 2000 from Journal of Visual Impairments & Blind(JVIB) and RE:view. The researchers found that other countries pay much attention to children with visual impairment and multiple disabilities, especially those with visual impairment and hearing impairment. In addition, the researchers found that the range of age of research participants was various and the majority of studies were experimental studies and case studies. The researchers also found that the education for students with visual impairment and multiple disabilities was divided educational environment, student instruction, and assessment. The researchers emphasized the needs of more studies on visual impairment with additional disabilities and the systematic approach for children with visual impairment and multiple disabilities.
