전국적으로 65,000개소 이상 설치되어 있는 경로당은 접근성이 높아 노인들이 가장 쉽게 이용할 수 있는 노인여가복지시설이지만 그 기능을 제대로 하지 못하고 있다. 인구 고령화 시대에 맞추어 경로당에도 인프라 확대를 위한 지원만이 아니라 노인들의 다양한 욕구에 부합하는 콘텐츠도 확충해주어야 한다. 본 사설에서는 현재 경로당 설치, 이용, 그리고 운영지원 현황을 점검하면서 경로당 활성화를 위한 방안을 제안하였다. 앞으로의 경로당은 특정한 사람만이 이용하는 노인 휴식 공간이 아닌 다양한 사람이 이용할 수 있도록 생산적이고 능동적인 다양한 프로그램을 발굴하고 운영하여 지역사회 노인 세대 내 뿐만 아니라 세대 간 교류가 활발한 센터로의 기능을 수행할 필요가 있다.
There have been over 65,000 senior community centers (경로당) nationwide in Korea. The centers for senior citizens have not been operating below their functions of leisure and welfare even though they locate near residential areas near to senior citizens. Both infrastructure as well as contents suitable for a variety of needs of the citizens should be expanded to support the functions in the era of population aging. While checking the current state of establishing, utilizing, and supporting the centers, some policies building up function of the centers were suggested in this editorial. The centers should be not just a resting space for a minority of older adults but a place of socially active interaction for a diverse community members in the future.
