이 연구에서는 조기유학생을 해외에서 학업을 선택한 아동기와 청소년기 학생인 동시에, 새로운 문화 안에서 적응해야 하는 타 문화인으로서 규정하였다. 조기유학생이 학생으로 느끼는 일상적 스트레스와 타문화 인으로 경험하는 문화이입 스트레스를 중심으로 그들의 부정적 정서와 유학만족감과 학교적응에 영향을 미치는 변인들 간의 관계를 문화적응 이론에 기초하여 확인하고, 조기유학 초등학생과 중고생의 문화적응 과정에서 나타나는 발달적 차이를 규명하였다. 조기유학생의 적응을 설명하는 이론적 모형을 초, 중, 고 조기유학생 618명의 자료를 이용하여 2단계 최소자승법으로 검증하였다. 첫째, 조기유학생이 경험하는 스트레스 수준 자체는 그리 높지 않았으나 그들의 심리적 적응과 학교적응을 설명하는 중요한 부분임을 확인하였다. 둘째, 조기유학생의 일상적 스트레스와 문화이입 스트레스 수준에 자아존중감과 자기통제력의 부적 영향력과 발인동기 변인의 정적 영향력이 확인되었다. 셋째, 조기유학생의 문화적응 스트레스의 수준과 유학만족감이 그들의 학교적응에 영향을 미쳤다. 넷째, 초등학생의 집단에서는 유학국가 변인이 사춘기를 지난 중고생의 경우에 성별이 그들이 경험하는 스트레스에 영향을 미쳤다. 다섯째, 초등학생에게는 일상적 스트레스가, 중고생에게는 문화이입 스트레스가 그들 의 적응을 설명하는 주요한 부분이다.
This study examined the experiences of South Korean students who undertook Early Study Abroad (ESA) in a different culture. This study focused on two aspects of their stress levels; their daily life stress which they feel as students and the acculturative stress which they feel as people from a different culture. This was done in order to examine ESA’s psychological and school adjustment and to investigate the relationships between the expecting factors, the stresses, and their adjustment in the different age groups. The participants were 618 ESA coming from five different countries. The statistical methods adopted for the data analysis were multiple regression and the 2 stage least squares method. The major findings were as follow: First, students did not experience much daily life stress nor acculturative stress. However, the two aspects of stress play an important part in describing their adjustment. Second, the daily life stress and the acculturative stress were negatively related to the level of self respect, the level of self control, and positively related to the level of push factors in all ages. Third, the influential variables affecting school adjustment were the level of acculturative stress and the satisfaction with life as a student abroad. Fourth, the influence of the country in which the student studies makes a difference only in the stress level of the elementary group. The influence of sexual differences was only revealed in the stress levels of the adolescent group. Lastly, the level of daily life stress was the most important factor in explaining the adjustment of the elementary group. The level of acculturative stress was the most important factor in explaining the adjustment of the adolescent group.
