The purpose of this study was to compare Eric Berne's transactional analysis and the communication styles of Satir family therapy theory in a bid to suggest effective communication styles geared toward stirring up the significant interpersonal conversation of clients having troubles in communication. Eric Berne's transactional analysis and the basic philosophy, human view, major concepts and communication styles of Satir family therapy theory were analyzed. Both theories were found to view dysfunctional communication as a way of coping with one's family of origin from childhood for the purpose of survival. According to the theories, dysfunctional communication takes place when there is a gap between one's inner psychological needs and his or her external communication related to the needs. In the transactional analysis theory, reciprocal transaction is regarded as the best communication style, which refers to the parallel transactional stimuli and reaction of ego state. According to Satir, coherent communication in which there is no discrepancy among psychological, interpersonal and spiritual dimensions is the best communication style, and furthering this communication style is the object of his therapy. In the future, the reciprocal transaction and the coherent communication style, which are the therapeutic objects of the two theories, are expected to be of great help to clients who face difficulties in interpersonal relationships due to lack of significant conversation.
