이 글은 정신적 보훈의 관점에서 2011년 발행된 고등학교 국사교과서 7종에 서술된 한국전쟁을 비교, 분석, 비판한 것이다. 그것을 통해 이 글은 한국전쟁에서 희생되었거나 참전한 유공자들의 헌신이 정당하게 평가받고 국가의 미래를 짊어질 자라나는 청소년들이 선열들의 애국, 호국정신을 본받을 수 있도록 하려면 한국전쟁에 대한 서술이 어떻게 이루어져야 하는가를 제시하고자 했다. 연구의 결과 대부분의 국사교과서들은 북한의 공격으로부터 지켜내야 할 대상인 대한민국이 북한에 비해 정통성이 있는 이유를 분명히 제시하지 않았으며 주권재민의 관점에서 남북 간의 정부구성 과정의 차이점을 드러내주지 못했다. ‘전쟁의 원인’에서는 북한이 전쟁을 주창했지만 결국 소련이 전쟁을 조정, 기획, 감독하고 북한은 맹목적으로 추종한 점을 분명히 전달하지 못했다. ‘전쟁의 과정’ 서술에서는 양민학살의 일차적 책임을 미군과 남한 측에 돌리고 있으며 사례선정에서도 편파적이었다. 모든 교과서들의 가장 큰 문제점으로는 ‘전쟁의 성격’을 누락시켰다는 점이다. 결국 국사교과서들은 한국전쟁이 어떤 전쟁이었는가를 교육하거나 참전자들의 헌신과 희생의 의미를 제대로 전달하지 못함으로써 피서훈자들에 대한 정신적 보훈, 그리고 교육을 통한 국가정체성 제고라는 목표 달성에 실패했다. 자신의 생명을 돌보지 아니하고 나라를 위해 목숨을 바친 참전희생자 및 유공자들에 대한 정신적 보훈의 차원에서라도 한국전쟁은 ‘대한민국수호전쟁’, ‘승리한 전쟁’으로 수정되고 교육되어야 한다.
This article is to compare, analyze, and criticize the interpretation of Korean War described in 7 Korean History Textbooks for High School Students from the perspective of respect for veterans' sacrifice. This article also tries to show how the textbooks should describe Korean War to repay the veterans' sacrifice to their country. According to the result of this study, most textbooks failed to reveal the difference between North Korea and South Korea in establishing each separate government. The fact is not pointed out in textbooks that South Korean election was more legitimate than North Korean One. In regard to the cause of war, most textbooks didn't make it clear the war was planned by the Soviet Union and waged by North Korea. Over the issue of massacre during the war, two kinds of textbooks made a big mistake that South Korea started it first. The most serious problem with the interpretation of the Korean war described in textbooks is that all of them missed the character of the war, what the essence of the Korean War was. The character of the Korean War should be remembered as a war to defend ROK.
