Forty seven years have passed since South Korea (ROK) was involved in the Vietnam War. There are still several sensitive matters associated with ROK’s involvement to the Vietnam War, such as: justification for entering the War, problems arising from mercenary soldiers, civilian damages, soldiers death by defoliant agent and aftercare of veterans. However, we cannot cover up this historical event any longer. With the 50th anniversary of the dispatch of Korean troops to Vietnam coming up, it is time to shed some light on the aftermath of ROK\'s involvement. It is also time to unveil covered-up problems and take accountability measures for them. This study primarily intends to bring up the effects and problems of ROK\'s dispatch. The findings are as follows. First, we can reinterpret the meaning of dispatch as \'the strategy of Park Jung-hee\'s government to promote the national interest\'. Although Park\'s government claimed that they sent the soldiers to Vietnam in order to defend freedom against the attack of Communism and to reward the favor of the Vietnamese government, the justification was only ostensible. However, the dispatch was successful in setting the foundation for ROK’s national development. Second, we have an obligation to recognize our veterans. In particular, it is imperative to publish a distinguished services list for those who: were Killed In Action (KIA), have rendered distinguished services, and were disabled by the war and defoliant agent sprayed by U.S. This study suggests how to setup a 50th anniversary of Vietnam War Commemoration Committee for research and recognition.
