근대 만주(滿洲) 지역은 현재 랴오녕성(遼寧省), 지린성(吉林省), 헤이룽강성(黑龍江省)을 아우르는 지역으로, 19세기부터 본격적으로 시작된 이주 조선인들의 삶의 터전이자, 항일 독립운동의 무대였으며, 1932년 만주국(滿洲國)의 설립으로 일제의 대동아공영권의 거점이 된 공간이었다. 20세기 초 조선인들은 다수의 만주 기행문을 남겼는데, 그 중에서 하얼빈은 근대 조선인의 만주 기행문의 주된 무대이며 감상적 서술이 두드러지는 공간이다. 하얼빈은 만주 지역 일대의 여행 일정 중 한 방문지로 다루어지기도 하고, 하얼빈만이 기행문의 대상이 되는 등, 만주의 다른 지역에 비하여 기록이 풍부하다. 작은 어촌 마을이었던 이곳은 1898년 제정 러시아의 동청철도(東淸鐵道)건설을 시작으로 급속하게 근대화된 도시가 되어 “동양의 모스크바”, “동양의 파리”인 국제도시로 인식되기 시작한다. 부동항이 필요했던 러시아가 뤼순(旅順)과 따렌(大連)을 조차한 후 만주에서 세력을 키워가면서, 일본의 견제가 가속화되었고, 1932년 하얼빈은 만주국에 마지막으로 포함된 도시가 되었다. 특히, 만주국 성립 후 만주 기행문의 증가 분위기 속에서 하얼빈에 대한 표상을 만들어내는 것은 하나의 ‘유행’이 되었던 것처럼 보인다.
In the early 20th century, in many Manchuria travel essays written by Joseon writers, Harbin was expected as the space in which they could experience Western culture as they have been imagined, which is the distinct characteristic comparing other Manchuria travel essays. The main object of their ‘observation\' was White Russian émigré and their culture being not protected by their \"nation\". Joseon travelers especially depicted in detail the sexuality of White Russian émigré woman and they convey the message of Harbin\'s being a decadent society. However, in Harbin, Joseon travelers under the Japanese colonial period seemed to be alienated effected by international order. White Russian émigré and their culture was the scenary of imperialism and the \"sorrow\" of Harbin was depicted and consumed as a hedonic city culture. The \"reality\" of Harbin consisted of ‘collective memories’ Joseon writers which were selected partially according to their necessity and produced in modern media repeatedly.
