There have been studies concerned with myth about origin of communities. While much previous research has focused on the creational themes as such origin of man, universe and cultures, very little is known about the meaning of ‘origin of community’ itself. This paper shows that the Okinawan creation myths are the discourses that declare the structual principles of the communities by telling the community’s origin stories. And this paper shows
that a reorganization myths(myths’ changes) means that the communities and its structual and mythiacl principles have been changed.
The typical type of village origin myth is that the ‘first fair’ who will be the sacred ancestors, had born human beings who will be the descendants. What this myth say is, for the descendant is due to be sacred ancestor, that universal village is a inner-completional community. But the version of Kourizima(古宇利島) in this type, tells about not community but human-being itself. And the myth of Taketomizima(竹富島) tell the creation of Taketomi island in the beginning, for rationalizing the newly political position, related to Ryukyu-dynasty, of Taketomi community. These version and type appeared due to the villages’ changes of politiacl position. As such, under the impact of Dynasty and its mythology, the myth of village origin have been changed as a world-view discourse.
On the other hand, under the control of Ryukyu a new political imagined community like as Miyako(宮古) and Yaeyama(八重山), had appeared between dynasty and village. The myths of these communities tend to imitate mythical principles and motif of the mythology of Ryukyu dynasty.
Consequently, I can say that Okinawan creation myths have been functioned as the discourses about world-view of mythical communities.
