The purpose of this paper is to study the way of communicating in multi cultural society through folklore. Especially, for mutual understanding with Vietnamese in Korea, Vietnamese folklore which is similar to Korean folklore is studied in this paper.
Vietnamese folklore A pond made in one night(一夜澤傳) is similar to Korean folklore Muwangseolhwa(武王說話) which is one of type folklore.
The common feature and the differences between these two folklores are as follows.
First of all, a daughter from each folklore confronted with her father, and left the father’s world. Then both daughters got married, and established their own world.
However, while the daughter from Muwangseolhwa(武王說話) made peace with her father later, the daughter from A pond made in one night failed to make peace with her father. The father from A pond made in one night had a doubt that his daughter would rise in rebellion against to him.
Another Vietnamese folklore Fruit from the west is similar to Korean folklore Sam-gong Bon Pu-ri which is also one of My Own Fortune type folklore.
A subject from Fruit from the west and a daughter from Sam-gong Bon Pu-ri got kicked out by a king and a father. The reason both characters were expelled is that they said they lived well because of their own fortune. Their statement made both the king and the father upset. However, the subject and the daughter came out well after they were thrown out.
Some roles and background are different between these two folklores, however the main conflict and the way of dealing with the problem are the same. Therefore, it can be said that both Korean and Vietnamese shares My Own Fortune type folklore.
From a literary therapeutic view, communication is the connection between different epic. In a multi cultural society, having the same epic can help to have mutual understanding between different culture. Using My Own Fortune type folklore, the way of communication between Korean and Vietnamese can be examined.
