The main purpose of this research is to suggest an alternative idea about
management system for military mental health through analysis for medical theory
and policy. In the 21st century, the way of war was transferred from conventional
military power to high technology military power after 9ㆍ11 terror in the United
States.
The field of military mental health in Korea has not been remarkably developed
because it was not considered important policy. But there are some military case that
are related to the mental health of soldiers on which they are suffered from various
traumas in recently. For example, R.O.K.S Cheonan was sunk in the Yellow Sea in
2010 and 58 survivors are complaining of pain in the mental while at military
hospital.
Therefore, the government of Korea and Ministry of National Defense should
established a substantial policy for management of military mental health. This
research suggest an action plan for developing the field of mental health as below,
First, the identity of mental health should be established in the military field.
Second, we will have a specialist facilities for military mental health and will be
trying to recruit more professionals who was trained by the professional insititution
of mental health. Finally, the military field and private sector should collaborate with
each other throughout academic exchange, policy development as well as personnel exchange.
In conclusion, the armed forces of South Korea, to beyond the Korean peninsula to
ensure world peace and security, should have a lot of interest in the mental health
field to drive the field's cutting-edge science and technology to leap instantly to the
strong armed forces based on science and technology in the near future.
