The purpose of this research is to understand the individuation process in the sandplay therapy of a middle-aged Korean woman who has emigrated to the States. This study pays special attention to the fact that her position of figures and her direction of her gazes were always from the left top looking down which remained the same continuously from the first session to the last. Its meanings were researched within her traits of psychological types. For this purpose, the alchemic four elements and Jung’s four functions of psychological types were investigated. the result of the study revealed that the workings of fire and air in alchemy symbolizing the woman’s main and auxiliary functions explain her preference for the left-top position and her direction of gaze. Also, this sandplay process shows the client’s individuation process by the series of figures she used in which her main function (intuition, fire) and her auxiliary function (thinking, air) harmonize with her third function (feeling, water) and her inferior function (sensation, earth) and realize the integration of the opposites.
