UNESCO defines that “heritage is our legacy from the past, what we
live with today, and what we pass on to future generation.” Heritage is
now regarded as the asset of future, not just as the memory of past.
Today, in addition to the conservation of our heritage of humanity, the
increasing efforts have been made to its educational and cultural utilization
in many countries. In the legal instruments of UNESCO and some
international organizations, cultural and natural heritages have been
emphasized as the foundation of sustainable development, the sources of
creativity, core of cultural and bio-diversity, symbol of peace and human
right, and bridge of inter-cultural understanding. In particular, “world
heritages” which are added every year by UNESCO's World Heritage
Committee is the most valuable source for the inter-cultural understanding
education. Following the strong recommendations at the international
community, many UNESCO's associated schools have been actively
participated in this project to provide the young children with the global
perspectives on the social and political issues. As like the other countries,
Korea also paid much emphasis on history education at the formal
education level. However, Korea's approach is still confined within the
limits of cultural property education, mainly focusing on history and art of
properties. In views of the main objectives of world heritage education,
Korea is not yet introducing the integrated educational methods for world
heritage into the formal and nonformal educations. World heritages are the
crucial educational sources for human right, climate change, environment,
peace, dialogue and human respect. New educational initiatives should be
urgently made to develop the teaching manuel and proper methods based
on the integrated and holistic approach.
