본 연구는 ‘발전(development)’ 개념에 대한 이해와 비판에서 출발하고자 한다. ‘지속가능발전은 왜 국제사회의 의제가 되었는가?’라고 물었을 때, 그 것은 발전에 대한 회의(懷疑)를 요구하기 때문이다. 그리고 ‘지속가능발전’ 을 그 물음에 대한 하나의 대안(代案)으로 이해하고, 국제사회에서 가장 널 리 인용되고 있는 지속가능발전의 정의(定義)와 함께 세계환경발전위원회 (World Commission on Environment and Development: WCED)가 제시 한 두 가지 핵심 개념을 분석함으로써 지속가능발전이 지구사회의 윤리적 규범임을 확인하고자 한다. 또한, ‘지속가능발전교육 렌즈(ESD Lens)’라는 은유(隱喩)를 통해, 지속가능발전교육 역시 지속가능발전이라는 윤리적 규 범을 이해하고 실천하기 위해 윤리적 성찰을 요청하고 있다는 점에 초점을 맞추고자 한다.
This study is based on formulating an understanding and critic towards ‘development’. ‘Sustainable development’ has become a global issue due to a skepticism on ‘development’. Sustainable Development could be considered as an critical alternative to the existing development paradigm. And based on the analysis of the two key concepts of sustainable development in Our Common Future(the report of the World Commission on Environment and Development), the concept of sustainable development inquire into an ethical approach to the concept of development. In other words, sustainable development is one of the normative standards in the international(global) society. In conclusion, through the metaphor of ‘Education for Sustainable Development Lens’(ESD Lens), this study emphasizes the critical and ethical character of Education for Sustainable Development as a the sustainable alternative to the existing stream of development.
