This study aims to examine, from various perspectives, the formation of (Ko family’s shaman song), one of the Josangsin Bonpuri(ancestor god shaman song) passed down as part of shamanism in Jeju Island, and the cause of its variation to have the current context that has been passed down today. is a type of Josangsin Bonpuri which emphasizes awareness about one’s status and kindred. The broad framework of its narrative seems to take the form of typical Josangsin Bonpuri, but it has been identified that Ko-jeonjeok Bonpuri highlighted a story related to the status and reputation of male ancestor gods in the beginning and had been passed down focusing on the divinity of kindred relations. Given these narrative features and historical facts related to how it had been passed down, the fact was found that the original narrative of included the history of Ko I-ji who was the founder of the Myeongdoam village, not Ko Hong-jin who was not directly related to the family. served as the basis of (Kim family’s shaman song). In its own right different from , is an ancestor religious belief, where the Myeongdoam Kim family touted the achievements of the historical figure Kim Jin-yong and his descendants. The background behind is related to a marital relationship between the two families. The way the Myeongdoam Kim family established its ancestor religious belief demonstrates an example of how a family’s ancestor religious belief or Josangsin Bonpuri is created in shamanism in Jeju Island. The Myeongdoam Kim family’s awareness as a family caused change―belief in Dang, ritual(), etc.―in the transmission context related to . The question of how was formed and passed down is intertwined with the way an ancestor religious belief or Josangsin Bonpuri was constantly created, changed, derived as intended by the aims or needs of the transmission community.
