본 논문은 남아메리카의 몇몇 원주민에게서 구비전승되어 온 <여자기원신화>의 신화적 의미를 분석한 것이다. <여자기원신화>는 넓게 보면 ‘인류기원신화’의 범주에 포함된다. ‘인류기원신화’는 크게 3가지 물음에 기초하여 있다. 즉 ‘최초인간은 어떻게 해서 생겨났는가?’, ‘어떻게 최초인간에 인간적 속성이 부여되었는가?’, ‘최초인간은 어떻게 번성하여 인류라는 무리를 이루게 되었는가?’ 등이 그것이다. 이 중 <여자기원신화>는 세 번째 물음에 더 초점이 맞추어져 있다. <여자기원신화>는 몇 편의 예외적 자료를 제외하면, 여자들의 질(膣)에 이빨이 있는가, 없는가의 유무에 따라 2개의 유형으로 구분된다. 전자를 유형Ⅰ, 후자를 유형Ⅱ라 칭하였다. 두 유형에서 공통적으로 확인되는, 공간적 전환의 구조는 여자들의 거주공간의 변화로써 설명된다. 그리고 이러한 변화는 남자들의 의식주가 여자들이 담당해야 할 의식주로 포획되는 과정을 보여준다. 유형Ⅰ에서 특징적으로 보이는, 즉 여자들의 질에 있던 이빨의 제거에 따른 신체적 속성의 변화는 여자들의 기능을 섹스와 출산, 집안일 등으로 한정시키고, 그와 관련한 결혼의식상의 금기를 생산해 내었다는 등의 의미를 함축한다. 요컨대 <여자기원신화>는 최초인간에 부여되는 인간적 속성을 신체적, 정신적 자질로써만 한정하여 설명하려 하지 않고, 그와 결부하여 사회문화적 기원까지를 설명하고 있다. 그런데 여자들과 관련한 이러한 2가지 특징은 지상의 최초남자들을 ‘인간-동물’의 단계에서 ‘인간’의 단계로 가는 과정을 이끌어낸다. 그런 점에서 <여자기원신화>는 동물과 인간의 경계에 대한 신화적 사유를 내포하고 있기도 하다.
This paper analyzes the mythological meaning of Myth of Women Origin, which has been handed down to some natives in South America. Myth of Women Origin is broadly included in the category of Myth of Human Origin The myth of human origin is largely based on three questions: How did the first human beings come into being? , How was the human nature given to the first human being? and How did the first human be flourished to form the human race? Myth of Women Origin is more focused on the third question. Except for a few exceptional data, Myth of Women Origin is divided into two types depending on whether teeth are present or absent in Vagina. The former was called Type I and the latter was called Type II in this paper. The structure of spatial movement, which is common to both types, is explained by the change in the residence space of women. And this change shows that men s food, clothing and shelter is what women should do. The change in the physical attributes of the type Ⅰ of characteristics, ie, the removal of the teeth in the vagina of women, limits women s role to sex, childbirth, housework, etc., and produces a taboo in the marriage ceremony. In short, Myth of Women Origin describes not only the physical attributes that are given to human beings but also their socio-cultural origins in connection with them. However, these two characteristics of women lead the first men on the earth to the stage of human-animal to human . In this respect, Myth of Women Origin implies a mythical thought about the border between animals and humans.
