이 글의 목적은 종립 고등학교의 경우를 중심으로 한국 종교교육의 정황을 정리하고 그 방향을 모색하는 것이다. 소기의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 Ⅱ장에서 한국 종교교육의 정황을 “대체로 ①학교선택권과 학생선발권이 주어지지 않는 상황에서 ②특정 신앙교육을 받아온 종교교사들이 ③특정 신앙이 강조된 교과를 토대로 ④신자와 비신자로 구성된 학생에게 ⑤특정 신앙을 강조하여 신앙인으로 육성하려는 교육”으로 정리한 후, 주로 ①번과 ②번과 ③번의 경우를 세부적으로 분석하였다. Ⅲ장에서는 한국 종교교육의 정황 속에서 나타난 쟁점을 성격 문제, 다른 교육영역과 연계 문제 등을 중심으로 고찰하였다. Ⅳ장 ‘한국 종교교육의 방향’에서는 교육부와 종립학교 측에서 종교교육의 정착을 위해 공공성 속의 자율성, 양심의 자유, 그리고 인문학적 교양교육화를 긍정할 필요가 있음을 주장하였다.필자는 논의 과정에서 평준화정책이 종교교육의 근본 문제가 아니며 오히려 문제 해결의 길은 종립학교 측에서 시작될 수도 있음을 지적하였다. 인문학적 교양교육화라는 목표 하에서 각 대학의 종교교사 양성 프로그램과 각 종단의 종교교사 재교육 프로그램, 그리고 종교 교과의 내용을 재정비할 필요가 있다는 점도 지적하였다. 또한 교육부가 종교교육 문제에 대해 미온적 입장을 유지한다면 종교교사 양성 프로그램, 종교교과의 편성 등에서 딜레마의 상황이 개선되지 않을 것이며, 이는 다종교상황에서 종교교육의 문제를 지속시키는 요인이 될 수 있다는 점도 지적하였다.만약 한국 사회에서 교육부와 종립 중등학교 측이 ‘공공성 속의 자율성’과 ‘양심의 자유’에 기반을 둔 ‘종교의 자유’에 합의하고, 이를 토대로 종교교육을 인문학적 교양교육으로 인식하고 정립하는 상황이 가능하게 될 때, 종교교육은 학생 중심의 사고에 바탕을 둔 다양한 교수법을 개발하는 등의 새로운 연구의 풍토가 조성될 가능성이 높아질 것이다.
The purpose of this research is to investigate situations and grope for directions of religious education in Korea. Through the process of this research, we tried to find out points of issue of religious education and examined the new directions of religious education that should be persued in the near future.To achieve these purposes, in chapter 2, in the title of situations of religious education I organized situations of religious in Korea like this; 1)problems of the school equalization policy, 2)teachers trained by faith education, 3)subjects laying emphasis on faith education, and so on. And I investigated concrete examples to present constructive directions of religious education.In chapter 3, points of issues of religious education , I classified two different issues of religious education. The first issue was, the identity of religious education that have two oppositional points of views from the time of 4th. national curriculum standard. The second issue was the possibility of connection between religious education and other education including moral education. The chapter 4, in the title of new direction of religious education , I layed stress on the basic rules of the religious education; individuality within publicity, freedom of religion, liberal education as Humanities.
