연구 목적 본 논문은 고통의 의미와 관련하여 도스토예프스키가 소설 『카라마조프 가의 형제들』에서 제기하는 신정론의 문제에, 가톨릭 신앙이 그리스도교 구원론적 관점에서 고통의 문제에 대해 성찰한 ｢구원에 이르는 고통｣ 문헌 내용을 토대로 과연 어떠한 신학적 답변과 해석적 전망을 제시할 수 있는지 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구 내용 소설 속 인물인 이반은 미래에 성취될 종말론적 구원을 위한 신의 계획에 따라 인간으로 하여금 현재 부당하게 겪고 있는 고통에 아무런 긍정적 의미를 제공하지 못하고, 이를 그저 감내해야 하는 피할 수 없는 운명으로 받아들이기를 강요하는 하느님 섭리를 부정한다. 그리스도교 신앙은 우선적으로 고통을 인간이 하느님께 지은 죄에 대한 벌로서, 그리고 죄로 인해 훼손된 하느님과의 관계를 회복하는 정화의 도구로서 이해한다. 하지만 이반이 제기한 무죄한 고통의 문제와 관련해서는 하느님 사랑의 신비 차원에서 고통의 의미를 파악할 필요성을 제시한다. 인류의 구원을 위한 조건 없는 사랑 자체이신 하느님 신비의 정수를 바로 예수 그리스도의 일생, 특히 그의 수난과 십자가 사건에서 발견할 수 있다. 바로 무죄한 고통을 겪고 있는 이들과 함께 아파하는 하느님이라는 새로운 모습을 계시하기 때문이다. 또한 그의 부활은 인간으로 하여금 고통을 단지 피할 수 없는 운명으로 받아들이지 않고, 종말론적 희망으로 현재의 고통에 직면하고 극복할 수 있는 실천을 위한 원동력으로 이해하게 한다. 연구 결과 그리하여 비록 무죄한 고통이라 할지라도, 고통을 사랑 자체인 하느님의 현존을 체험할 수 있을 뿐 아니라 이를 극복할 수 있는 희망을 발견할 수 있는 공간이 될 수 있음을 그리스도교 신앙은 고백한다.
PURPOSE The article provides theological answers and interpretive contribution as to the theodical debates over suffering and vulnerability raised in the Brothers Karamazov. CONTENTS Ivan, the character in the novel, challenges the divine authority for humans living in the continual presence of suffering. The providence of God let man to accept innocent suffering as an inevitable fate that must be endured, in order for him to ultimately reach eschatological salvation. Suffering is mainly understood as a punishment for man’s sin against God under the Christian faith, and as an instrument of purification by which he restores his relationship with God. However, in relation to the problem of innocent suffering raised by Ivan, it is crucial to understand the meaning of suffering in terms of the mystery of God’s love. The essence of the mystery of God, who symbolizes unconditional love for the salvation of mankind, can be found in the life of Jesus Christ, especially in His Passion and Crucifixion. He reveals a new image of God, suffering with innocent sufferers. Also, His Resurrection denying suffering as merely an inevitable fate, motivates man to confront and overcome the present suffering with eschatological hope. RESULTS Thus, Christian faith confesses that even if it is the innocent suffering, it can provide a room where one can not only experience the presence of God, which is Love Itself, but also find hope that the suffering could be overcome.
