[Objective] This study aims to explore the religious-educational meanings and role of social commemorial following national disasters.
[Contents] This study first explored the occurrence of social death and how our society responds. In this study, social death is defined as unjust death and describes how our society responds to it. Next, the necessity and methodology of social commemorial were presented. In this study, I sought to describe the process of social commemorial as a process of mourning-memory-reflection, and to present the methodological perspective necessary for the importance of religious rituals in the level of mourning and the process of memory-reflection. Finally, I will pointed out the limitations of religious rituals) in the level of mourning and noted the need to explore new directions for the role of religion in social commemorial.
[Conclusions] This study sought to provide a critical view of the fact that the role of religion in social commemorial has been limited to extremely limited aspects such as religious rituals in the level of mourning. In addition, I will pointed out the fact that political mourning has been central to social commemorial following the national disasters and pointed out the limitations of political mourning in the conclusion. In this respect, this study points out the limitations of both aspects of religious mourning, centered on religious practice, and political mourning, centered on criticism and struggle, and suggests as a conclusion that the search for the direction of social commemorial at a new direction on the dimension of religious educational.
