This study explored the perspectives and methods of local history education that aims for public history, focusing on the relationship and connection between ‘local history and local cultural heritage’ and ‘public history’ based on interest in the region as a specific place of life. First, I organized memory discourse and the characteristics of local history and local history education as the basis of local history education. I emphasized that revealing and discovering the voices of marginalized regions is meaningful in that it fosters awareness of regional identity and diversity, connects with civic education, and views students as subjects of participation and action. Next, after organizing the process of emergence, concept, and characteristics of public history, the perspective of local history education that aims for public history was revealed through the concept of ‘future heritage’ and examples of ‘utilization of local cultural heritage.’ Methods of local history education for public history practice were discussed with a focus on the case of the ‘Anseong Line’ railroad. After analyzing the curriculum content system and achievement standards, the goals and detailed activities plan of the future heritage ‘Anseong Line’ public history project were presented. It is significant in that it presents a concrete plan for local history education that aims for public history. Public history is a major space where various agents participate to reproduce and interpret history. I hope that the boundaries of public history practice will expand as local history research and education aimed at public history become more active.
