The purpose of this study is to inquire into the effect of older adults\' participation in religious activities
(Protestantism) on mental health, particularly, depression and self-esteem. For this, a survey was made on 220 older
adults in the age of over 60 attending each church by selecting Protestant churches located in Seoul, Gyeonggi and
Chungnam areas. The survey contents were explained to believers of each church, and the survey was requested to
them to collect 212 copies by mail. 202 copies except for responses, which the contents were omitted, or inconsistent
responses among 212 copies were used for a final analysis.on mental health, particularly, First, the level of older
adults\' general religious activities showed that systematic religious activities are followed by unsystematic religious
activities, and general religious activities are an average mark of 3.64. Also, the difference in religious activities by
demographic characteristics showed that by sex, the level of elderly women\'s general and systematic religious activities
is relatively higher than that of elderly men\'s general and systematic religious activities. By age, for the age of over
65 compared to under 65, the level of unsystematic religious activities was relatively high. Second, the effect of older
adults\' religious activities(systematic religious activities, unsystematic religious activities) on self-esteem showed that the
systematic religious activities have a significant effect on the self-esteem. Third, the effect of older adults\' religious
activities(systematic religious activities, unsystematic religious activities) on depression showed that the systematic and
unsystematic religious activities have a significant effect on the depression. Consequently, considering that older adults\'
participation in religious activities had a effect on the improvement in self-esteem and the reduction of depression, the
religious institutions like churches of the community will have to be applied as a platform for offering older adults
service by expanding professionals who carry professional social welfare into practice, and social welfare practicers will
have to become persons who connect services such as leisure program and promotion of participation in church
activities through close relations between local communities and local older adults.
